Workshop: Repointing Historic Masonry Buildings

Itinerary:

  • Hands-on Lime Slaking
  • Old-World Techniques
  • Preparation and Application of Historic Lime Mortars

Practical Information and Techniques for your Projects
If you want to achieve effective color, ingredient and texture matches on your repointing mortars, or if you have difficulty in identifying historic mortar in masonry buildings, you should be sure to attend one of these workshops.

Repointing mortar joints in historic masonry buildings with the wrong mortar formulation and incorrect trade practices are two of the most problem-prone areas of any masonry project, especially as they relate to the strength and breathability of historic masonry. Mortar mixes today are much less forgiving and far less breathable than historic mortars once were: if a failure occurs after a modern mortar has been installed, its repair may be extremely expensive and difficult to achieve. Failure to identify and establish a compatible repointing mortar or improperly installing the mortar results in damage to valuable historic brick and stone.

Improve Your Skills
To successfully repoint historic masonry buildings, you must be highly skilled and proficient in your work. You need clear knowledge of mortar history and traditional ingredients and you must know how, where, and when a traditional lime mortar should be used. This workshop will provide practical information and show how you can improve your skills in solving your masonry deterioration problems. It will present techniques, illustrated by examples and case studies, that will help you to install historically accurate repointing mortar in your next project. It will also describe and demonstrate specialized tools for joint cut-out and wall preparation.

During the two intensive days, you will hear nationally recognized experts and be able to discuss with them your specific problems. In addition to particpating in the workshop and interacting with your instructors, you will have an opportunity to share your work experiences with other participants.
