April 18, 2008: International Day for Monuments and Sites
Started by the International Council on Monuments and Sites and endorsed by UNESCO, the International Day for Monuments and Sites is celebrated by preservationists across the globe. ICOMOS describes the occasion as “an opportunity to raise public awareness concerning the diversity of the world’s heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it, as well as to draw attention to its vulnerability.”
Though the International Day for Monuments and Sites will celebrate the breadth of the world’s cultural heritage, this year’s theme, Religious Heritage and Sacred Places, highlights the significance of places of worship throughout our history.
To commemorate the April 18 occasion, ICOMOS has invited the preservation community to organize activities and events that showcase examples of conservation action worthy of sharing with the global preservation community. Also, the ICOMOS Secretariat would appreciate advanced notification of any activities planned for April 18. Please contact Volker Zimmermann at zimmermann@icomos.org with any event information.
