Ground-breaking heritage conservator, Jacques Dalibard, dies

Traditional Masonry regretfully reports that Jacques Dalibard, one of the founders of the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT), passed away on Sept. 15th, 2007, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Traditional Masonry regretfully reports that Jacques Dalibard, one of the founders of the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT), passed away on Sept. 15th, 2007, after a valiant battle with cancer. What follows is adapted from an APT tribute to Dalibard.

Through his work as an educator and as a practitioner, Jacques Dalibard made an outstanding contribution to the field of heritage conservation. He was one of the first Canadians formally trained in heritage conservation and was an innovator, a leader and a pioneer in the field.

With a group of Canadian and American colleagues, he established APT, a cross-disciplinary membership organization dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings.

Dalibard spoke frequently in Europe, the United States and Canada, and he was committed to educating others about conservation. In the late 1970s, he directed the Historic Preservation program at Columbia University in New York, and for a decade leading up to his retirement in 2005, he was a professor in the Faculté de l’aménagement de l’Université de Montréal.

In July 2007, the Heritage Canada Foundation presented Dalibard with the Gabrielle Léger Award for Lifetime Achievement in Heritage Conservation, which recognizes individuals who have contributed outstanding services to the nation in the cause of heritage conservation.

The Association for Preservation Technology International will be preparing a special tribute issue of APT Bulletin to honor Dalibard. Please send any tributes, memories or photos of Dalibard to the editor of APT Bulletin, Diana Waite, at dwaite@mountidapress.com.
