Stone-carving workshops feature guest instructors Sax Stonecarving Workshops has released a summer schedule for its workshops at Southwest Stoneworks in Rinconada, N.M.
Summer Session 1, “Encyclopedia of Stone Carving,” will be taught July 14-20. Guest instructor Allen Williams, of Chester Granite in Blandford, Mass., is a third-generation granite quarrier, carver, letterer, sculptor, and stonework historian, and has been teaching since 1977. Through discussion and demonstrations, he will cover tool selection, care, and use, reading the grain in stone, quarrying, rigging, cutting with fire, lettering, carving, and surface finishing. Williams will explore the history of the trade and how stone was cut and moved in the days before motors and electricity, and will show his extensive collection of antique tools. This seven-day intensive class is appropriate for intermediate to professional levels.
Summer Session 2, “East Meets West,” will be offered August 11-17 and features guest instructor Joseph Kincannon and guest artist Kazutaka Uchida, of Tokyo, Japan. Returning for a fifth year, Uchida is an inspired sculptor and an inspiring presence, with an exquisite Japanese aesthetic and more than four decades of carving experience. His work is in the permanent collections of museums worldwide. Kincannon, of Austin, Texas, is a guild-certified master carver and was the lead stone carver at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City for 11 years. He is praised for his carving vocabulary and ability to communicate and demonstrate the traditional techniques of European carvers. This seven-day class is appropriate for all levels of experience, from novice to professional. (505) 579-9179 www.saxstonecarving.com
