Conservation group looks ahead In 2008, Heritage Conservation Network will take on projects at both new and favorite former destinations.
Three projects are planned for Eastern Europe. At a workshop in Albania at a World Heritage Site, the castle town of Gjirokastra, participants will assist the Albanian National Trust in the preservation of an Ottoman-era stone house. In Gyumri, Armenia, HCN will join local residents and students from Mississippi State University at St. Grigor Illuminator church, which was severely damaged during two earthquakes in 1988. A return trip to Slovenia will take participants to a historic farmhouse where the goal is to preserve the country’s farm culture as well as the structure itself.
Also, HCN will undertake its first project in the United Kingdom next year. It will work with Cob in Cornwall, a company that specializes in ancient methods of cob building and natural lime and earth-based finishes. The group will also return to Illinois in the United States to partner with the Illinois Barn Alliance and help restore a historic barn to use. www.heritageconservation.net
