Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference
It's a Capitol idea
The Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference will be held at the Washington Hilton Hotel and Towers in Washington, D.C., from October 4-7. The conference will include a variety of tours, seminars and exhibitors.
For those who specialize in the trowel trades, the following workshops and seminars will have special appeal: "Understanding Lime Mortar," with John Speweik and Mario Machnicki of U.S. Heritage Group; a seminar on the basics of repairing historic plaster with Rory Brennan of Preservation Plastering; mold-making and casting with Marc Fields from the Compleat Sculptor; and a seminar on the pros and cons of various cleaning methods, led by the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Association for Preservation Technology. Overall, there will be more than 70 sessions covering everything from repair philosophy to new construction with period details.
Many tours will be offered as well. Take a stained glass tour of the churches of Washington, D.C., or tour Rosedale, a farm estate purported to be Washington's oldest extant residence dating from the 1740s. Other tours include: the President Abraham Lincoln Cottage; Mount Vernon, including the Treading Barn and Distillery; the U.S. Department of Treasury; and the National Civic Art Society's tour of additions to monumental buildings in Washington, D.C.
The exhibit hall floor will feature hard-to-find products and specialty items used in historic preservation. Company experts will be there to discuss their products and how best to use them. Also, you can earn AIA credits toward recertification. (800) 982-6247 www.traditionalbuildingshow.com
